It was the biggest ice storms in ten years. Our power went out around 8:30 in the evening, so we lit candles and fired up the gas log in the living room. Since the living room was the warmest place in the house, we made a bed on the floor in front of the fireplace. (You probably know where this is going.) As we lay there in front of the fire, listening to trees and limbs give way under the weight of all the ice, my mind turned to more romantic ways to stay warm. My wife, on the other hand, was preoccupied with the thought of an ice ladened tree crashing through our roof and killing us where we lay. After making sure she couldn’t be persuaded, I changed my plans and we cuddled up together in front of the fire place till we fell asleep. I remember waking up in the middle of the night to find my wife still snuggled up against me. In that moment I thought, “This is as good as sex…almost.” Then I closed my eyes and drifted back to sleep. Now I realize this is an inherently male slant on things. I also realize there are wives reading this who are probably thinking, “There are a lot of things as good as sex…no almost to it.” But give me this one little revelation. This one little glimmer of hope that I’m not completely driven by that little three letter word. Yes, it took an inch of ice and a power outage, but at least for one night I had the good sense to realize that there are some things that are as good as sex…almost.
