Depravity
What our pastors have said about depravity, drawn from messages preached across our campuses.
In their own words
“Number three, no depravity. Depravity is a big word. What does that mean? Depravity means corruption and wickedness. You can think of it as evil. We believe as Christians that as much as we want to believe that we're naturally good people, as much as we want to believe that people are good on their own, we're not. Romans 3.23 says this, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.”
Austin Anderson · Invite Night“And then we believe there's no depravity, that the problem with humanity is not that we're depraved in sin, but that we're deprived. And if we give everybody better economics, better education, better environment, that they're going to thrive and all of life's problems are going away. And while I believe in education and I believe in economic recovery and relief and I believe in a better environment, I want you to know what's wrong with man. It's not what he doesn't have, it's what he does have, and that's a sinful nature. He's depraved.”
David H. McKinley · You and Your Mind, Part 1“Number one, we must show compassion. People don't care about what you know until they know how much you care. Let me say that again. People don't care about what you have to say until they know how much you care. And compassion is birthed out of a fresh understanding of my depravity. What do I mean by that? What is depravity? It's brokenness.”
Stephen Newman · How to Make Disciples“The Bible teaches, for all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. But the world in which we live absolutely denies human depravity. In fact, what the world tells us is not that you're depraved, but you're deprived. And if you have better education, and if you have better environment, and if you have better economics, then that will change your life.”
David H. McKinley · You and Your Mouth, Part 3“An association with the reality of human depravity and human wickedness. The reality is that we are depraved and we are wicked. And he's pointing to the tongue and saying the tongue is what reminds us of just how far away from God we are. And the purpose of God for our mouths. If you go back again, he's already addressed this in James chapter 1 and in verse 19 and 20.”
David H. McKinley · You and Your Mouth, Part 1“But secondly, we are demonstrating our depravity. We are demonstrating our depravity.”
David H. McKinley · Saved: The Goal of God's Grace“We forget about his goodness. We don't pause long enough to think about God and reflect in his goodness. We don't have daily practices where we can sit and rest and remember it in the state of our depravity when we have no hope and we have nothing. And then Jesus showed up and gave us everything. We forget about things often, times. When we think about God's faithfulness next to our fallenness, what happens is gratitude seeps in and the life of worship begins to spring forward.”
Shane Padgett · When Jesus Stops“Gosh, your voice is beautiful. You have so much to offer. No, you don't. You are a wicked and depraved person. And apart from Christ, we have nothing to offer. And so sometimes we need to be slapped around a little and go, yeah, you think you're big stuff, man. I know what you've been doing in your time alone. You've shared it with me.”
