Idolatry
What our pastors have said about idolatry, drawn from messages preached across our campuses.
In their own words
“Josiah's legacy was built upon that. Really other important thing that he did, fifth action, is that he removed idolatry. He removed idolatry. So we're walking in relationship with the Lord, we're calling other people to do that and then now we are trying to get rid of sin, anything that would cause the people to sin and I'm going to read a couple of verses that kind of describe the the cleansing process that took place.”
· Young Adults Speak - Leaving a Lasting Legacy“I need to see it in scripture. I need to know if the Bible backs that concept and that idea up. Now, listen, I don't believe that we should just be pursuing the blessing. That in and of itself would be an idolatry, wouldn't it? If we were just seeking not God, but what God could give us. That is idolatry.”
Grant Janik · Week 4“But the Bible also talks about this reality that there is the idolatry of the heart. And when the Bible talks about idolatry, it's not just talking about bowing down to statues or that's a part of it. It's talking about a matter of the heart. An idol is whatever you look at and you think, man, if I can just have that, I'll be okay. or on the flip side, maybe it's something that you already have and you say, man, if I ever lose this thing, then life will be over for me.”
Austin Anderson · Warren Students - January 21st“There's a lot of idols tonight in the room, I just wanna say. We've got a lot of idolatry going on tonight. We've got a lot of people bound in lies, a lot of followers of Jesus bound in lies right now. That's why this conference is happening. Can I just have your permission in my final minute just to share a personal, I don't share this story very often. I have to be honest with you, I've written about the peace of God a lot. I have a study Bible coming out on the peace of God.”
Jeremiah Johnston · Jeremiah Johnston“We studied the book of Daniel this weekend because Daniel and his friends were transported out of a godly place and into a place of a pagan culture where there's all kinds of idolatry and idol worship around them.”
Austin Anderson · Winter Conference“I think he would call out maybe some idolatry in our hearts. I think there's some idolatry of ourselves and maybe some self-sufficiency in the Western American church. I think I see that. I also see some greed, maybe in some parts of the Western American church. But I think one thing in particular sticks out like a sore thumb above all else. And if I'm honest, it's been plaguing the American church for too long, and I'm sick of its filthy teeth having its teeth in the bride.”
Riley Blair · A Hunger for God“It's in Jesus' name we pray. Amen. So a few things that I want us to see from this text this morning, and the first thing is this, is that drifting into idolatry is easier than we think. Drifting into idolatry is easier than we think.”
Daniel Ritchie · Dangers of Distraction“We are to separate from the immorality and the idolatry around us. Again, in chapter 5, beginning in verse 3, it says, But sexual immorality and all impurity or covetousness must not be named among you as is proper among the saints.”
