Do you ever find yourself tossed about by the storms of life, thrown this way and that? Do you find that when the waters become choppy, your emotions follow the same trajectory, slicing whatever or whomever gets in your way? When the waves crash and the waters roar, do you lose hope and begin sinking in despair?
The Word of God assures us that we have hope. In fact, we have THE Hope – Jesus. Hebrews 6:19 says,
We have this as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul, a hope that enters into the inner place behind the curtain …
When Jesus died on the cross for your sin and mine, the curtain came down. The veil that separated the Holy Place from the Holy of Holies where the presence of God dwelled, tore in two. (Matthew 27:51) No longer was there any separation. No longer did God’s people have to depend on a priest to offer a sacrifice for sins. No longer was there a barrier between God and mankind. The presence of God, through Jesus, became a reality!
“Behind the curtain” we find the sureness we need to live life Above the Waves. “Behind the curtain” we find Jesus – the One who anchors us and keeps us secure. He is steadfast, sure, and immovable. This isn’t some “pie in the sky,” “hope so” naivety. The steadfast assurance of Jesus is our anchor. You can bet your life on it, because Jesus gave His life for it.
Take a look at these verses that speak of God and His Son, Jesus, as our sure and steadfast anchor, our salvation, our hope, our refuge, and our strength.

Now, take a moment to reflect on these questions, answering them honestly:
- How are you doing with the details of life?
- In your day-to-day life, do you find yourself sinking or swimming?
- When the waves come crashing, how do you respond?
- When the waters rise, do your emotions rise as well?
- Have you hit a plateau in life, a place where you’re just floating about aimlessly unable to discern what to do next or what your purpose is in this stage of life?
At our Women’s Retreat in February, we’ll explore this theme (Above the Waves) in depth. We’ll look at the ways Jesus anchors our soul by looking practically at areas of life where we often find ourselves sinking. We’ll learn how to live Above the Waves when we’re shipwrecked and without a boat. We’ll learn how God’s Word can anchor our souls when the waters are deep. We’ll discover that Jesus can lift us above the rough waters of marriage issues, disappointments of life, desperation or despair, and cause us to walk on water with Him.
