Our Name of God this Week:  Jehovah Rapha —The Lord Who Heals

heal – rāp̱a’ to heal, to make fresh. It describes the process of healing, being restored to health, made healthy, usable, fertile.

This week you will spend quite a bit of time studying the concept of healing in the Word. To begin our week, read through the following verses and note what you learn about God as our Jehovah-Rapha, the Lord Who Heals.  Remember to consider the context/setting of each passage. We will begin with our focal passage of the week where the name Jehovah Rapha is first revealed.

Exodus 15:22- 27

Then Moses made Israel set out from the Red Sea, and they went into the wilderness of Shur. They went three days in the wilderness and found no water. When they came to Marah, they could not drink the water of Marah because it was bitter; therefore it was named Marah. And the people grumbled against Moses, saying, “What shall we drink?” And he cried to the Lord, and the Lord showed him a log, and he threw it into the water, and the water became sweet. There the Lord made for them a statute and a rule, and there he tested them, saying, “If you will diligently listen to the voice of the Lord your God, and do that which is right in his eyes, and give ear to his commandments and keep all his statutes, I will put none of the diseases on you that I put on the Egyptians, for I am the Lord, your healer.

Psalm 103:1-5

Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless his holy name!

Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits,

who forgives all your iniquity,

who heals all your diseases,

who redeems your life from the pit,

who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy,

who satisfies you with good so that your youth is renewed like the eagle.

Psalm 147:1-5

Praise the Lord! For it is good to sing praises to our God; for it is pleasant, and a song of praise is fitting. The Lord builds up Jerusalem; he gathers the outcasts of Israel. He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds. He determines the number of the stars; he gives to all of them their names. Great is our Lord, and abundant in power; his understanding is beyond measure.

1 Peter 2:24

He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed.

We see from these verses that the Lord God is our healer. Did you note from what we are healed?

  • He heals our diseases
  • He heals the brokenhearted
  • He heals our brokenness
  • He heals our sin —by His wounds we have been healed!

Also known as YHWH-Rapha. Jesus demonstrated that He was Jehovah-Rapha in his healing of the sick, blind, lame, and casting out demons. Jesus also heals His people from sin and unrighteousness. (Lk 5:31- 32). God has provided the final cure for spiritual, physical and emotional sickness in Jesus Christ. Our greatest need for healing is from our hearts which are desperately sick, diseased with sin. Jeremiah 17:5 states, The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?

Oh thankfully, the Great Physician has provided for our greatest need for healing!

Only one Physician can heal the ills of our souls. Why look elsewhere? Why not trust in the name of our Lord and rely on God (Isaiah 50: 10)? Where do you run when you need healing? Jehovah- rapha is there— waiting with outstretched arms, Calvary arms. —Kay Arthur

Walking in His Name: Jehovah Rapha

Where do you run when the ills of your soul are in need of healing? When you find your self brokenhearted, broken in body or spirit or grieved over sin? Do you run to Jehovah Rapha?  I thought I’d close by sharing with you a practical way to walk in His name, Jehovah Rapha, the Lord Who Heals. These are lessons gleaned from Psalm 5. I have found these to be so powerful and encouraging in my own life.

  • POUR OUT cry out to God, pour out your heart to Him.

Listen to my words, Lord, consider my lament.  Hear my cry for help, my King and my God, for to you I pray. In the morning, Lord, you hear my voice; in the morning I lay my requests before you… — Ps 5:1-3 (NIV)

  • STEP OUT step out in faith, trusting God and His plans and purposes for your life.

But I enter Your house by the abundance of Your faithful love; I bow down toward Your holy temple in reverential awe of You. — Ps 5:7 (HCSB)

The Lord’s unfailing love surrounds the man who trusts in him. Psalm 32:10 (NIV)

  • LOOK OUTkeep an eternal perspective, this is not our home. We are just passing through this world.

At daybreak, Lord, You hear my voice; at daybreak I plead my case to You and watch expectantly. — Ps 5:3 (HCSB)

  • SING OUTbe thankful and rejoice.  Give thanks to God and praise Him.

But let all who take refuge in You rejoice; let them shout for joy forever. — Ps 5:11 (HCSB)

Jeremiah revealed our problem in verse 5, but what encouragement he declares in verse 14:

Heal me, O Lord, and I shall be healed; save me, and I shall be saved, for you are my praise.Jeremiah 17:14

Close today with a time of praise to the Lord for the ways He has saved, healed and provided for us.
