Ode to Clanking Cups

Ode_Dec3

As a young girl I remember a beautiful song my mother would sing in church. A story-like song, it told the familiar tale of the woman at the well. The woman was searching for something to satisfy her lost and lonely soul. Read these words from the song, Fill My Cup, Lord by Richard E. Blanchard, Sr.

Like the woman at the well I was seeking

For things that could not satisfy;

And then I heard my Savior speaking:

“Draw from my well that never shall run dry”.

There are millions in this world who are craving

The pleasures earthly things afford;

But none can match the wondrous treasure

That I find in Jesus Christ my Lord.

Fill my cup Lord, I lift it up, Lord!

Come and quench this thirsting of my soul;

Bread of heaven, Feed me till I want no more

Fill my cup, fill it up and make me whole!

Our journey to contentment causes us to make a few corrections. Just as a composer revises her masterpiece, so God continuously works on His glorious creation in us. Crafting and creating, His magnum opus only reaches completion over a lifetime of concerts, dress rehearsals, and master classes.

The storyline of the song, Fill My Cup, Lord, is based on the historical account found in John 4. This woman was looking for something to satisfy the deepest need of her soul, filling her cup with the things of this world but never reaching contentment. Why? Because that which she placed in her cup caused her more pain than joy, more sorrow than satisfaction, more suffering than security. That day at the well she finally found that which she had searched for a lifetime. Her cup was filled and the song that resounded loudly in her heart was infused with the name of Jesus.

What are you putting in your cup? Are you allowing the Lord to fill your cup or do you look to other things to satisfy? Jobs, status, relationships, money, clothes, shoes, food, houses and cars, notoriety, comfort, security, control, have any of these things so filled your cup that it clanks and cracks? These things, my dear one, can drown out the Savior, become idols and leave you wanting more but finding nothing.

Is your heart singing a song of sorrow or a song of thanks? Perhaps you’re like I once was, so overwhelmed with sorrow and sadness, that you poured empty things in your cup to sooth your soul, but found in the end that the bitterness remained.

Consider a song of Thanksgiving for your sorrows.  A lament that, though it spills over with hurts, crushed dreams, bumps and bruises, leaves you joy-filled from its cathartic healing balm. A balm that coats your heart with Jesus like a warm dose of momma’s old fashioned Chamomile tea with honey, allowing you to sing songs of joy once more.

Gratitude heals the heart. Counting our blessings stirs the soul getting out the clumps of ungratefulness, disappointment, sorrow, and strife.

  • What fills your cup? Is it clanking and cracked or are you composing a capriccio of joy and thanksgiving?
  • Do you find contentment in the contents of your cup or do you constantly desire change?
  • Are you brimming with joy or drowning in sorrow?
  • Will you choose an ode of joy, satisfaction, and peace that will quench your thirsty soul and lead you to worship the Creator?

Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. – 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

Have a blessed week!
