The word “trust” has two different meanings. One is a verb, to trust, which is an action. It means to rely on or place confidence in someone or something. The other is a noun, trust, which is an asset managed by a third party. For purposes of this essay, it is a combination of the two.
Sometimes people set up a Trust fund for their children and/or grandchildren. It is theirs, but they can’t access it until they attain certain parameters which may be an age or level of accomplishment or some other criteria. Until that time, the Trust is managed by the Trustees of that Trust. Matthew 6:20-21 says “But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in or steal. For where your treasure is, there will your heart be, also.” Imagine that! We have a treasure in heaven! It is ours! We own it! We can’t see it, touch it, or access it right now, but we’re adding to it and building it up. God himself is the Trustee of our treasure, he is managing it for us.
Isaiah 26 is a song of trust in God’s protection. Verses 3-4 say, ”The steadfast of mind You will keep in perfect peace, because he trusts in you. Trust in the Lord forever, for in God the Lord, we have an everlasting Rock.” Psalm 13:5 “But I trust in Your unfailing love; my heart rejoices in Your salvation.” Proverbs 3:5 “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding…”
These are just a few of the verses about trust in the Bible. As I thought of these two concepts together, I realized that God has set up an inheritance for each of us who believe. It is ours, we just have to trust Him. One day we will receive the riches He has stored for us as long as we trust. Until then our sovereign God manages our Trust Fund. Some of our treasures may be small; others may be vast, but God oversees them all until we meet the requirements to inherit our Trust. The more we trust Him, the bigger The Trust Fund!
